The Allotment House
Pensaer London
Southwark, 2024
Longlisted
A charming London cottage, with a graceful extension, inspired by our clients' relationship with their garden.
Within the garden is an allotment, a key design driver. The form is derived from an analysis of the clients' day-to-day lives, creating a covered seating space to rest, contemplate, take wellies off, and place produce. Beneath the bench is a rainwater harvesting tank, fed from the roofs. Planted alongside is a selection of calming, scented plants. A highly personal expression of our clients is found in this architecture.
The client is stone mason, the plinth / grounding the extension, therefore started with stone. We then extended the existing lead roof, and introduced oak panelling and steel windows, creating a hand made extension with a depth of character.
