Segmental House
Dominic McKenzie Architects
Lambeth, 2025
Part of a fine Victorian square in South London, the Grade 2 listed 1850 house has been sensitively renovated and extended by Dominic McKenzie Architects (DMA). The extension uses custom-made arched/ segmental bricks designed by DMA. The bricks’ playful contemporary motif is combined with the traditional Flemish bond visible on the original house. The pattern itself relates to the historic arched details visible in the house’s original architecture. The lower ground has been opened up and lined throughout with bespoke Douglas fir panelling similar to the Gothenburg City Hall Extension by renowned Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund.
“The best part of this project has been the ability to turn what had been a rabbit warren of dark rooms in the lower ground into a bright, open and modern space. The juxtaposition of the traditional rest of the house with the new space is amazing.”
