Rusty House on the Rye is a 1950s property located in the Holly Grove Conservation Area of Peckham. Local (born and bred) architect Sarah Borowiecka of studio on the rye renovated and extended the house—updating the thermal efficiency of the existing house, and providing a new kitchen / dining space, utility room, home office, snug and master bedroom suite. The design, based on simple monolithic forms, sits comfortably in its context. Weathered Corten steel was chosen for the cladding to complement the tone of the house's red brick, and to introduce a visually striking element to the design.

“Everything has turned out better than I ever imagined. I appointed Sarah after speaking with a number of architects about the project. She really stood out as she was the only one who came to the house for the first consultation and immediately understood what I was looking for. I really liked her aesthetic vision of working with the surroundings while avoiding pastiche, which, being focused on the practicalities of what I wanted room/space-wise, wasn’t something I had even thought about.”
