Mulroy Architects completely transformed this 1920s home for a family of keen bakers, making a large, floating, multi-level kitchen island as the centrepiece of a striking extension — uniting social and cooking zones and maximising views across the garden. The homeowners wanted to extend and visually link the house and garden, stating that they wanted a room with no barriers or segregation, in which the kitchen island did not feel like a ‘mausoleum’. Instead of a conventional extension in plan, the kitchen extends seven metres into the garden at an angle, allowing a larger island to be built within the kitchen, and evoking a sense of movement by mimicking the zig-zag route through the garden.
