Oak House
Proctor & Shaw
Lambeth, 2022
Longlisted
The original Arts and Craft inspired home has several articulated timber elements. Proctor and Shaw’s design response was to embroider this timber narrative with three distinct Oak interventions, each one entwined with key extensions and reconfigurations to the property.
The ground floor is opened up and extended with a contemporary timber ‘bay window’ to the rear incorporating a custom bench seat usable from inside and out.
The large open-plan family room is anchored with a new kitchen, designed by Proctor & Shaw, articulated with oak cabinetry and concrete counters. The third intervention reorganises the first floor layout. A curved Oak battened wall encompasses the ensuite shower room and hovers under a high, almost double height, roof light.
A unique conceptual approach to the craft and materiality for the project developed early on as a contextual response to the original house. Three distinct new oak elements are embroidered into the narrative of the home. The timber framed extensions ensure that the home connects with the garden in a seasonal and contemporary way, the kitchen anchors the expansive family space and is well supported with discreet access to the utility space behind. The 1st floor circulation is embellished with a new curved oak battened wall, encompassing the master ensuite, and leads to the master bedroom which now enjoys garden views and a dramatic cathedral ceiling.
