Kings Road House

Matthew Giles Architects

Merton, 2025

This Edwardian house has been transformed in every way and is a contemporary equivalent to the traditional brick homes along Kings Road. The client is a family of four and saw an opportunity to create a truly bespoke home and boost environmental performance. Matthew Giles Architects have repurposed the best parts of the building, where exposed elements contrast the new building fabric, providing a strong focus on quality and texture. Chamfered edges are a consistent form throughout and entice views while reducing impact on neighbours. A textured limewash used over the face of the brick adds to the monolithic appearance.

“The spatial proportions and their inter relationships are the overriding feature. Every space feels airy, quiet yet sociable and comfortable, like a natural living space, both generous but intimate. Every room has a specific feature that captures visual attention. Family practicality is ingrained through the design. So… there is no favourite part of the house as the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
