House in Barnes is a part renovation and extension of a victorian terrace in the White Hart Lane conservation area. The ground floor is reconfigured to create an open and light set of spaces for a young family defined by changes in level and varying ceiling heights, balancing openness with intimacy. The project is quiet and simple, but works hard to create an open set of spaces that flow intuitively and feel dynamic for a young family to come together. At the same time the different spaces feel defined, giving variation and richness to the experience. The changing ceiling heights of the extension naturally create the sense of different spaces within one room. Frames and nibs subtely help define edges creating cosy and intimate corners.
