Elgin Avenue Apartment

The project involved the extension, remodelling and complete refurbishment of a top-floor mansion block apartment.

The previously dark, constrained spaces have been transformed by extending into the pitched roof voids, creating impressive double-height volumes filled with natural light. This offers a sense of arrival and an unexpected moment of delight upon entering the vaulted entrance hall. An insertion of timber joinery acts as a device to link the rooms and enrich the area of circulation, so that what was a narrow corridor becomes a space in itself.

Whilst offering a generosity of space, the sculptural quality of light and highly crafted natural materials — oak, marble and bronze, combine to provide an atmosphere that is intimate and serene, within the context of the city.
